Frequently Asked Questions

What are the benefits of being a member?

All members in good standing may:

  • Attend any TOOOL US chapter meeting or event
  • Vote on questions put forth before the membership
  • Access national and chapter newsletters, announcements, mailing lists, and forums

In addition, members will receive a membership card. (Please note that membership cards are a work in progress.)

How much does membership cost and how long does it last?

Individual membership in TOOOL US starts at $25 per year.

Your membership term will start when you join and end one year from that date.

Can I still attend my local TOOOL meeting if I decide not to become a member?

It is the policy of TOOOL US that, at minimum, every third meeting (specifically the ones taking place in February, May, August, and November) are designated as “public meetings” and are to be held in locations fully-accessible to the public (where no entrance fee or membership are required).

For other meetings, your local TOOOL chapter leader may restrict attendance to only those individuals who are members of the organization. If you are unclear about your local chapter’s policy, please contact your local chapter leader.

What types of membership are available?

For the moment, we offer two types of individual membership: Basic and Regular.

In addition to our deep gratitude for your support at both the Basic and Regular levels, Regular members may opt to receive a thank you gift.

We may, in the future, offer other types of membership.

We will also assign a limited number of honorary memberships to recognize the extraordinary contributions of certain individuals.

How do I join?

You can join TOOOL US by purchasing a membership at

At this time, memberships may not be purchased by phone.

If you wish, Your local chapter may be able to process your membership. Please check with your local chapter leader for more information.

Membership dues may be paid be paid by credit card (Visa, Mastercard, American Express, or Discover) or by E-Check (ACH/EFT).

Who is eligible to become a member of TOOOL US?

Membership in the TOOOL US is open to all individuals who subscribe to the aims of the organization, wish to regularly participate in our activities, and agree act in accordance with our by-laws and policies.

Why are you formalizing membership now after all these years of informal membership?

In order to grow and thrive, TOOOL needs to do more than it has done in the past. Without knowing ourselves first, we cannot make concrete plans for the future, such as the making equitable decisions about future policies, electing new officers, and selecting future board members.

Are my membership dues tax-deductible?

Because TOOOL US is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization, a portion of your membership may be tax-deductible. We will send you a summary of your financial contributions message regarding this annually, probably in February.

Managing your membership

When you first join, we will send you a message asking you to set a password for your new account. You can later use that login to review your membership term at

Once logged in to the membership site, you can renew or cancel your membership.

Will any part of my membership dues go to support my chapter?

Dues will be used, in part, to provide supplies, support, and services to local chapter. A portion of membership dues may also be distributed directly to local chapters, though this is still under discussion.

Who will have access to my membership information?

For TOOOL US to meaningfully engage with members, we need to understand where you live. Providing your address will also help with future endeavors such as mailings, etc.

A record of your membership will be accessible by the leader of your local TOOOL chapter and members of the TOOOL US board. A small number of individuals who help us maintain our membership system will also have access to information stored within it.

We pledge not to pass your personal information to other organizations beyond TOOOL US and its international affiliates (TOOOL NL, TOOOL UK, TOOOL BE) without your consent. If you use our secure contribution pages, we will also share details necessary for financial transactions with our payment processor.

The information you share helps us serve you better and informs future activity across the organisation, helping us to be more effective in our activities. It may also be used for routine administration such as distribution of the members’ newsletter, membership renewals and regular donations.

What will you spend my membership dues on?

Membership dues, like all revenue accrued by TOOOL US, also support the organization’s appearance at public events, hosting member gatherings, equipment and materials for local chapters, and the ongoing engagement of professional services to support the organization as needed.

Termination of membership

Membership can be terminated in four ways:

  • If the member dies
  • If the member renounces their affiliation with the Association (resignation)
  • If the member routinely fails to perform duties or pay dues (administrative discharge)
  • If the member is forcefully terminated for failure to comply with the rules and by-laws (expulsion)
